SEVIRI LEVEL 2 PRODUCT
This web page hosts SEVIRI Level 2 products of sea skin temperature for the Mediterranean area (-10° ÷ 42° E; 29° ÷ 49° N) for a temporal coverage of seven years (2013-2019).
Within the framework of various projects supported by EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) and CINFAI (Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per la Fisica delle Atmosfere ed Idrosfere) - RITMARE/CNR (Ricerca Italiana per il Mare/Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) a Kalman filter methodology (Masiello et al., 2013), (Masiello et al., 2015), (Blasi et al., 2016) (Masiello et al., 2019) has been developed to retrieve simultaneously skin temperature and emissivity (8.7, 10.8 and 12 µm) from SEVIRI radiances. This is one of the few very physical based approaches for the estimation of surface parameters from infrared instruments on board geostationary platforms capable to resolve the diurnal cycle. A prototype processor is developed to provide these products in real time, making it very attractive for application in different fields.
Here monthly averages of sea skin temperature are available, however data at full SEVIRI temporal resolution (15 minutes) can be required. Contact person Dr. Sara Venafra
